Community
I recognize that the University of Manitoba is on Treaty 1, homeland to the Anishinaabeg, Cree. Oji Cree, Dakota, Métis and Dene Peoples. Therefore, It is crucial to prioritize Indigenous issues and maintain effective communication between UMSU and the Indigenous executives. It will help us promote increased Indigenous representation within UMSU and its shareholders while embracing our Indigenous student’s culture and language.
There is a disconnection between students and the Board of Directors. However, the decisions they make often directly influence the academic and professional success of our students. As your president, I would actively raise awareness of the Board’s vital function by creating opportunities for students to engage with the Board of directors and UMSU executives. I believe this increased representation and participation will bridge the gaps between board members and students. As a result, the Board’s decisions can align with the needs and challenges facing students. This can be achieved by encouraging community reps and executives to have regularly scheduled office hours where students can share concerns and areas for improvement. Encourage students to submit motions they think may benefit the union and give them a platform to discuss and espouse their motion at the bi-weekly board meeting.
In the summer thousands of students stood in solidarity for the right of black, Indeginouse and people of colour . The issues of racism need to be properly addressed within our community. The first step Umsu took was creating a black student union, but to create and maintain a just and equitable society we will need a committee with a paid chair position dedicated to this plan. They will make sure every Umsu executive or student club leader will go through Diversity Equity and Inclusion training to create awareness.
During my term, I plan on improving the club space experience and put in strict guidelines to help keep the rooms safe and clean. Also, Providing support for student clubs to navigate the online system.
I plan to provide community representatives with the required training and access to resources needed to address situations within their respective communities promptly. My goal is to connect communities with their representatives to strengthen communication between community leaders and UMSU elected community representatives.
Creating the opportunity to celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community while promoting a healthy environment to educate and connect people to diversity equity and inclusion.
Our university is home to thousands of international students, that make up about 17% of our total population. Let us all come together and celebrate their unique cultures and contributions to the university.
Health
In the 2020 UMSU fall survey about 50% of students reported struggling with their mental health. I will advocate for removing barriers to seeking assistance and a Province-wide coverage on mental health services for both domestic and international students. These barriers can be removed by educating people on the stigma around mental health. This will encourage students to seek help when they need it.
UMSU has taken the right step to declare a climate emergency. My goal is to ensure that we continue to address sustainability issues within this institution’s operations by supporting ethical business partners, zero waste/declutter campaigns. Continuation of online delivery of course outline and material even upon in person resumption, all UMSU businesses must follow sustainability conduct. UMSU will continue to advocate for open educational resources.
- Advocate for province-wide mental health coverage
- Lobby government to ease its mandate against UMFA
Self-isolation is hard, especially for students that do not have family members to assist with grocery shopping. New UMSU will support students with food hampers and self-care products. During reopening I will ensure that all safety protocols are put in place to welcome back students safely.
Education
To advocate for more reasonable deadlines for Student Accessibility Services declarations, emphasizing improved confidentiality and quality assurance so that your experience is genuinely accommodating.
UMSU will continue to advocate for open educational resources. This will decrease the cost of textbooks for students.
- Advocate for the possible amendment of the cumulative GPA and limited access policies.
- Advocate for the expansion of university hardship funds to include legal representation for international students.
Finance
The recent and upcoming tuition increases have severely impacted the accessibility and affordability of post-secondary education. I am fully aware of the university-wide implications of raising tuition prices. I plan on utilizing survey platforms to collect information on how the last tuition increase has impacted students. I hope to use this information to inform discussions on future tuition increases for domestic and international students. Nova Scotia has set a precedent for student loan forgiveness, if they can do it we can as well.
The financial burden from covid 19 has affected all students. I will focus on increasing the budget for the hardship fund and making sure cases are reviewed promptly. There is uncertainty for university funding in the coming years. I will strive to make sure we maintain essential student services.
Creating on-campus jobs for students with UMSU businesses and internship positions for students to work directly with professional UMSU staff or executives.
